Loving What Is: Sessions Available with Amanda Winters, LCSW on Utilizing The Simple 4 Questions of The Work of Byron Katie
What is "The Work" Method?
The Work of Byron Katie is a simple process of self-discovery that teaches us how to meet our thinking, and therefore our entire lives, with clarity, love and understanding. The Work is a sure way out of the experience of confusion and a step into the experience of true internal peace.

*Pictured: Amanda Winters and Byron Katie at a School for the Work 2011
Byron Katie’s Work is a great blessing for our planet. The root cause of suffering is identification with our thoughts, the ‘stories’ that are continuously running through our minds. The Work acts like a razor-sharp sword that cuts through that illusion and enables you to know for yourself the timeless essence of your being. Joy, peace, and love emanate from it as your natural state. Eckhart Tolle, author, The Power of Now
"The Work is called self-help, but it is far more than that: it is self-realization, and it leads to the end of suffering. As we investigate a stressful thought, we see for ourselves that it's untrue; we get to look at the cause-and-effect of it, to observe in sobering detail exactly what modes of pain and confusion result from believing it; then we get a glimpse into the empty mirror, the world beyond our story of the world, & see what our life would be like without the thought; and finally we get to experience the opposite of what we have so firmly believed. Once we deeply question a thought, it loses its power to cause us pain, & eventually it ceases even to arise.""I don't let go of my thoughts," Katie says. I meet them with understanding. Then they let go of me." *quote from Byron Katie in A Thousand Names for Joy
The Work Process:
The Work is a simple yet powerful process of inquiry that teaches you to identify and question the thoughts that cause all the suffering in the world. It’s a way to understand what’s hurting you, and to address the cause of your problems with clarity.
You can begin The Work Process by going to this link:
http://www.thework.com/thework.asp .
**The Four Questions of The Work:
1. Is it true?
2. Can you absolutely know that it's true?
3. How do you react, what happens, when you believe that thought?
4. Who would you be without that thought?
Next, turn the thought around. Find three genuine and specific examples of how that turn around is as true or truer.
*The Turnaround
The turnarounds are an opportunity to experience the opposite of what you believe to be true. You may find several turnarounds.
For example, "Paul should understand me" turns around to:
I should understand me. I should understand Paul. Paul
I shouldn't understand me. Let yourself fully experience the turnarounds. For each one, find at least three genuine, specific examples in your life where the turnaround is true.

"The Work is merely four questions; it’s not even a thing. It has no motive, no strings. It’s nothing without your answers. These four questions will join any program you’ve got and enhance it. Any religion you have – they’ll enhance it. If you have no religion, they will bring you joy. And they’ll burn up anything that isn’t true for you. They’ll burn through to the reality that has always been waiting." – Byron Katie

**About Internationally Recognized Author, Byron Katie
Byron Katie, founder of The Work, has one job: to teach people how to end their own suffering. As she guides people through the powerful process of inquiry called The Work, they find that their stressful beliefs—about life, other people, or themselves— radically shift and their lives are changed forever.
Based on Byron Katie's direct experience of how suffering is created and ended, The Work is an astonishingly simple process, accessible to people of all ages and backgrounds, and requires nothing more than a pen and paper and an open mind.
**Background Info on How The Work Began for Katie
Byron Katie became severely depressed in her early thirties. For almost a decade she spiraled down into depression, rage, self-loathing, and constant thoughts of suicide; for the last two years she was often unable to leave her bedroom.
Then one morning in February 1986, she experienced a life-changing realization. There are various names for an experience like this. Katie calls it "waking up to reality."
In that instant of no-time, she says,
I discovered that when I believed my thoughts, I suffered, but that when I didn’t believe them, I didn’t suffer, and that this is true for every human being. Freedom is as simple as that. I found that suffering is optional. I found a joy within me that has never disappeared, not for a single moment. That joy is in everyone, always.
She realized that what had been causing her depression was not the world around her, but the beliefs she'd had about the world. Instead of hopelessly trying to change the world to match her thoughts about how it should be, she could question these thoughts and, by meeting reality as it is, experience unimaginable freedom and joy. As a result, a bedridden, suicidal woman was instantly filled with love for everything life brings.
Katie's process of self-inquiry, called The Work, didn't develop from this experience; she says that it woke up with her, as her, that February morning in 1986. The first people who did The Work reported that it had transformed their lives, and she soon began receiving invitations to teach the process publicly. Since 1986, she has brought The Work to hundreds of thousands of people across the world, at free public events, in prisons, hospitals, churches, corporations, universities, schools, at weekend workshops, and at her amazing nine-day School for The Work. -Byron Katie’s 9-day School for The Work
*The Schools are expensive and awesome. I have never heard anyone say they regretted the money they spent. Nonetheless, many people do not have the time or money to commit to one.
*From my personal experience, I think that the best bargain to experience Katie is her New Year’s Cleanse. It is nothing but Katie, on stage, doing The Work. Check her website for more details on it. Also, there are scholarships awarded to attend the school which you can apply for on her website. After the first school, as a repeater, future schools are cheaper. Also, you can apply to be a volunteer at The School for the Work, however, the room and board must still be paid for by you, which is still thousands of dollars.
The School is the ultimate inner adventure. Unlike every other school on earth, this one isn't for learning—it's for unlearning. You'll spend nine days losing the fear-based stories you've innocently clung to all your life. They might be stories like "I'm not good enough" or "I need a partner" or "I'll never get over it" or "I have to be in control." Who would you be without those stressful stories?
At the School you'll discover that your stories are everyone's, and everyone's stories are yours. You'll be welcomed into a diverse, supportive family where you can be completely yourself without fear of judgment, perhaps for the first time in your life. You'll facilitate your classmates' Work as they open up to themselves. And then you'll trade places, and they'll do the same for you.
Graduates of The School for the Work, are able to interact with a very amazing conscious community through her website forums. Graduates also are eligible to be candidates in The Institute for the Work, which allows one to take tele-classes to learn more about this method
