If you see yourself in others, whom can you harm? The Buddha

I am working on a problem I never think about beauty. I only think about how to solve the problem. But when I have finished, if the solution is not beautiful, I know it is wrong.

-R. Buckminster Fuller, engineer, designer, and architect (1895-1983)

His mother had often said, When you choose an action, you choose the consequences of that action. She had emphasized the corollary of this axiom even more vehemently: when you desired a consequence you had damned well better take the action that would create it.
-Lois McMaster Bujold, writer (1949- )

“Sometimes life's shadows are caused by our standing in our own sunshine.”
Ralph Waldo Emerson

Whenever our life seems to be dark and devoid of excitement…..we should take a good look at what we are regularly focusing the immense power of our attention on.

We are always free to choose what thoughts, feelings and emotions we will entertain on a
regular basis ----and that, over time, determines our experience.  Written by Walt Brewer,  minister of The Austin Center for Religious Science

    common."
           Ralph Waldo Emerson

"What you praise you increase."
- Catherine Ponder

Bear in mind that the wonderful things you learn in your schools are
the work of many generations. All this is put in your hands as your
inheritance in order that you may receive it, honor it, add to it,
and one day faithfully hand it on to your children.

       creator of mental sunshine."

Graffiti on a wall in Berkeley, California

"Whenever we are appreciative, we are filled with a sense of
well being and swept up by the feelings of joy. ....I decided to stop
climbing mindlessly to some undefined peak of accomplishment and
focus my attention on all the wonderful things that were happening in
my day-to-day existence. As I do, without my even trying, joy creeps
in."

lives by investing in someone else's.

If the doors of perception were cleansed, everything would appear to man as it is, infinite. For man has closed himself up, till he sees of things through narrow chinks of his cavern" (William Blake)

I do not know what I may appear to the world; but to myself I seem
to have been only like a boy playing on the seashore, and diverting
myself now and then finding a smoother pebble or a prettier shell
than ordinary, whilst the great ocean of truth lay all undiscovered
before me.
-Isaac Newton, philosopher and mathematician (1642-1727)

We who lived in concentration camps can remember the men who
walked through the huts comforting others, giving away their last
piece of bread. They may have been few in number, but they offer
sufficient proof that everything can be taken from a man but one
thing: the last of the human freedoms -- to choose one's attitude in
any given set of circumstances, to choose one's own way.

- Viktor Frankl
author, neurologist and psychiatrist, Holocaust survivor (1905-1997)

I am only one, but I am one. I cannot do everything, but I can do
something. And I will not let what I cannot do interfere with what I
can do."
Edward Everett Hale

“When other people tell you that "everyone is really selfish or
cares only about themselves" you can tell them that it's not true of you and you
are not so sure it's true of them either.”  Michael Lerner for more info, see http://tikkun.best.vwh.net/

“It’s a big sweet life……” John Dee Graham

"Compassion is a kind of fire. It disturbs, it surprises, it ignites, it burns, it sears, and it warms. Compassion incinerates denial; it especially warms and melts cold hearts, cold structures, frozen minds, and self-satisfied lifestyles. Those who are touched by compassion have their lives turned upside down. That is not necessarily a bad thing."
    - Matthew Fox, Episcopal priest and theologian, in the book Creation Spirituality
Grief
Grief brings the unexpected.
Lost relationships are recovered,
loving friendships are renewed.
In each other’s pain we acknowledge our own fragile humanity;
we recognize the desperate fight of another
against death and its unthinkable claims.
The connection is spellbinding,
calling us out into the universe
when we are ready. —Molly Fumia, Safe Passage
"How beautiful the world will be when we have mystically journeyed back up
to the light. When all lower thought has been transformed into its highest
possibility, when all human energies have been freed from the tyranny of
fear, how light we will be, how released we will feel. And the time is
now: We can accept the future in the present moment. The Jews say the
Messiah is coming; the Christians say the Messiah has been here; Einstein
said that there is no time. The truth is, the Messiah is within. It
doesn't matter what we call it or how we frame it. All that matters is
that we claim our inheritance, the power of God to heal and redeem us.
Forget the language. Just build a new world."
---Marianne Williamson,  Illuminata

Affirmation:

I gladly accept my divine assignment.

Prayer for Today:

Dear God,

What would You have me do today?
I am listening in the silence of meditation.
How can I help the world?
I accept the inheritance You have offered me.
I accept the tasks that are mine to do.
Work through me that all might be filled with love and joy.
Now is the time for love and I am willing.
Thank You.
Amen

“The greatest revolution of our generation is the discovery that human beings, by changing the inner attitudes of their minds, can change the outer aspects of their lives.” William James
Love
"Love demands all, and has a right to it" Beethoven
"Some day, after we have mastered the winds, the waves, the tides and gravity, we shall harness the energies of love. Then, for the second time in the history of the world, man will have discovered fire." - Pierre Theilhard de ChardinWhen asked whether meditation alone could save the world, His Holiness the Dalai Lama responded, "If we are to save the world, we must have a plan. But no plan will work unless we meditate."

Love is never lost. If not reciprocated, it will flow back and soften and purify the heart. - Washington Irving

"The best portion of a good man's life----his little nameless,
unremembered act of kindness and of love."
            - William Wordsworth Career Quotes:

"Some of us are pickpockets to each other's dreams.  We kind
of pick apart the idea, we pick apart the possibility, we steal the
hope. We pick apart what can really be done.  And others of us
really are put-pockets.  We put in each other's pockets positive
ideas.  We fill others with hope. We put in each other's pockets,
"I believe you" statements. "I know it's possible. I believe in you."

"From this day on, vow to fill others with your positive energy, and
help make their dreams come true."

Mary Manin Morrissey
*from Amanda: This reminds me of a quote from my favorite alternative
career guide "Do it" (6 bucks and full of awesome quotes) by Peter McWilliams that says that "most people tell you 'I can't believe you did it' after you do something, so why would they believe you before?"

A related concept is that we are not responsible for how our work is received==just to give ourselves permission to develop our gifts and to have the courage to distribute them.

Also Julia Cameron in her book "The Right to Write" (great short book!)--says that many people try to belittle your work b/c it hasn't met their (often arbitrary and certainly personal to them) criteria of "success"==usually a financial reward. She states that one's work is even more legitimate if one does it for the love of it, not for money==or b/c "the man" wants it done.

Peace Quotes

All we are saying is give peace a chance.
—John Lennon

Peace is more important than all justice; and peace was not made for the sake of justice, but justice for the sake of peace. —Martin Luther (1483-1546)

If we have no peace, it is because we have forgotten that we belong to each other.

--Mother Teresa

While you are proclaiming peace with your lips, be careful to have it even more fully in your heart.

--St. Francis of Assisi
There is no way to peace. Peace is the way. --A.J. Muste

"No matter how much restriction civilization imposes on the individual, he nevertheless finds some way to circumvent it. Wit is the best safety valve modern man has evolved, the more civilization, the more repression, the more need there is for wit." Sigmund Freud

HOW TO USE INTERPERSONAL HEALING AS AN ACT OF POWER:

"The source of war lies in each of us, as does the source of peace.
As we rid our own hearts of the spark of violence, we are fostering
peace in the world. Ultimately, we come to realize that there is no
world outside us. All external reality is mere reflection of
consciousness, and thus, in order to change the world, we must change
our minds. The world is in the circle, as it is in every one of us.

Gathering together as New Activists, we find among us the roots of
war. Someone may judge someone else; someone may not like someone
else's personality; someone may hold resentments regarding a
particular situation. As we heal ourselves of our own judgments and
subtle thoughts of conflict, we automatically affect the minds of
those who perpetrate greater violence in the world."

This is the true joy in life…being used for a purpose recognized by yourself as a mighty one…being a force of nature instead of a feverish little clod of ailments and grievances complaining that the world will not devote itself to making you happy….I am of the opinion that my life belongs to the whole community and as long as I live it is my privilege to do for it whatever I can. I want to be thoroughly used up when I die. For the harder I work the more I live. I rejoice in life for its own sake.

Life is no brief candle to me. It’s a sort of splendid torch which I’ve got to hold up for the moment and I want to make it burn as brightly as possible before handing it on to future generations.

 George Bernard Shaw

“A transparent person has nothing left to hide b/c of his self-acceptance. Because his soul is loved, he wholly reveals himself. He is just what he is, freed from paranoid concealment.

It is living your life with the spiritual radiance of the holy fool== who has dared to live life as it presents itself and to unfold his or her personality with its heavy yet creative dose of imperfection.”

"The influence of one beautiful, helpful, hopeful character is
contagious and may revolution a whole town." Eleanor H. Porter

Without inner peace, it is impossible to have world peace.

—Dalai Lama

Peace is not a relationship of nations. It is a condition of mind brought about by a serenity of soul.

Nothing that I can do will change the structure of the universe. But maybe, by raising my voice I can help the greatest of all causes - goodwill among men and peace on earth.
—Albert Einstein

Nonviolence means avoiding not only external physical violence but also internal violence of spirit. You not only refuse to shoot a man, but you refuse to hate him.

—Martin Luther King, Jr.

Instead of loving what you think is peace,

love other men and women and love God above all else.

Instead of hating all the people you think are warmongers,

hate the appetites and disorders in your own soul which are the causes of war.

—Thomas Merton

At some ideas you stand perplexed, especially at the sight of human sins,

uncertain whether to combat it by force or by human love. Always decide,

"I will combat it with human love." If you make up your mind about that once and for all,

you can conquer the whole world. Loving humility is a terrible force;

it is the strongest of all things and there is nothing like it.

The Flower Prayer - A Call to Activism

by Susan Bright, 10/11/02

Hold a flower in your mind,

feel it emerge from thick reality, wet and cold.

Open your soul to growth you can't see or understand.

Peace will come from existing reality, or not at all.

Be as intelligent as a flower.

Stick your face out of the crowd, point it at the sun.

Unfold the knit of wrath around you,

    flower in full blooming glory.

Be a flower of the world, face pointed at the sun,

a small gesture of hope. Be a different invention.

Like a flower, learn to use energy that comes

from sun and wind, from water and soil.

Plant seeds of peace, plant solar invention.

Be as exhaustive as the wind.

    Be a flower.

The flower has a way of being that sticks out of mud.

I can be that resilient. And so can you. We are clues.

If you flower, other people remember they can too.

Judgment

"What we think of as people's guilt is their
fear. All negativity derives from fear. When
someone is angry, they are afraid. When someone
is rude, they are afraid. When someone is
manipulative, they are afraid. When someone is
cruel, they are afraid. There is no fear that
love does not dissolve.

There is no negativity that forgiveness does not transform.

Darkness is merely the absence of light, and
fear is merely the absence of love. We can't
get rid of darkness by hitting it with a
baseball bat, because there is nothing to hit.
If we want to be rid  of darkness, we must
turn on a light. Similarly, if we want to be rid
of fear, we cannot fight it but must replace it
with love."
Affirmation:
I am willing to be a light.     - by Marianne Williamson, A Return To Love

Recovering one’s fractured sense of self: -

your dependency to change THEIR mind. The only real problem is that you have forgotten who you are."

Immediate political gain is not necessarily the goal of the New Activist.

Rather, we place our faith in the power of truth over time, recognizing that positions supporting a freer, more compassionate human experience are literally backed by cosmic impulse.

In the words of Martin Luther King, Jr., "The moral arc of the universe is long, but it bends toward justice."

  In truth everything and everyone
Is a shadow of the Beloved,
And our seeking is His seeking
And our words are His words...
We search for Him here and there,
while looking right at Him.
Sitting by His side, we ask:
"O Beloved, where is the Beloved?"

cowardice would always inflict suffering. Perfect nonviolence is the

always is.

"The source of war lies in each of us, as does the source of peace. As we rid our own hearts of the spark of violence, we are fostering peace in the world. Ultimately, we come to realize that there is no world outside us. All external reality is mere reflection of consciousness, and thus, in order to change the world, we must change our minds.

... As we heal ourselves of our own judgments and subtle thoughts of conflict, we automatically affect the minds of those who perpetrate greater violence in the world."
